Information About the Trip (from
the September 2008 Youth Newsletter)
Have you ever been to a coal mining town? Do you know where Hank
Williams died? I am excited about next year’s youth work trip to
Oak Hill, West Virginia on June 28-July 4 through Group WorkCamps. To
qualify for the work trip, our youth must meet four requirements. They
must:
1. be 14 years old by the time of the trip
(or going into 9th grade in the fall of 2009)
2. pay the $50 deposit by September 25
3. participate in the fundraising efforts, and
4. complete the pre-project study.
Fundraising
It would be convenient if Faith United Methodist Church budgeted
money for the youth work trip so our kids wouldn’t have to raise extra
money. After all, budgets do express what the church believes, so they
should include enough money for a time when youth potentially will make
important decisions about their faith and life, right? Fundraising for
mission trips is especially important. It is powerful when, during their
week of camp, they are sweating in the hot sun doing their service, and
a local person inevitably asks how much the students are being paid for
this. The kids respond by saying: “We paid to come here and work.” It
predictably amazes people that teenagers would pay for work. However, it
is also a great teachable moment for the students who realize it really
is better to give than receive. They learn that following Jesus is all
about giving of ones self and expecting nothing in return... and it is
amazing to watch. Thus, fundraising will be a requirement for the trip.
The cost per person is $442. Each youth will be required to raise half
of that amount on their own ($221). They must also participate in our
group fundraising activities. These will help offset the total costs,
including transportation, the half-day fun activity, and supplies for
the trip.
Pre-Project Study
While the details for the preproject study have not yet been
finalized, it will likely be in a retreat format, rather than a series
of meetings. Please do not underestimate this vital part of the work
trip experience of teambuilding and missions education. We need to be
prepared...not just to be on mission for one week, but also to make
missions a lifestyle.
